Rocky Mountain Resources has proposed a large expansion of the existing Midcontinent limestone quarry near Glenwood Springs. Many cavers are concerned about the potential impacts both on the popular, wonderfully decorated tourist caves at Glenwood Caverns, as well as other smaller lesser known caves in the area. There are also concerns about the impact on the tourist economy of Glenwood Springs of such large scale quarrying and the large increase in heavy truck traffic.
The quarry expansion must be approved by the Bureau of Land Management. The most recent proposal from RMR has been sent back as incomplete by the BLM.
The Glenwood Springs Citizens’ Alliance represents residents of Glenwood Springs opposed to the quarry expansion. Their website is a good source for further updated information about the status of the quarry expansion proposal.
